Stephen Hawkey Joins Greenville Symphony Orchestra

2017 Jul 5

Stephen Hawkey, a senior orchestral instrument performance major at Bob Jones University, was recently selected for the cello section of the Greenville Symphony Orchestra (GSO), becoming the youngest current cellist in the orchestra.

The GSO is dedicated to providing educational and cultural opportunities for the citizens of Greenville and surrounding communities through the presentation of live orchestral music. Offering excellence in live musical performance, the orchestra enriches lives, educates minds and encourages community support of the arts.

Hawkey, a resident of Hendersonville, will participate in over 50 rehearsals and concerts during the 2017-2018 GSO season, including a performance with 28-year-old Korean pianist Yekwon Wunwoo, the recent winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

"Playing with the GSO this next season will help prepare me for the rest of my career as an orchestral musician," says Hawkey. "Performing a vast repertoire of music and playing alongside other professionals is vital for a musician my age, and I'm thrilled for the opportunity."
