Hannah Garbutt Named to BJU's Collegiate Choir

2014 Nov 4

The Bob Jones University music faculty has named Hannah Garbutt of West Point to the University's Collegiate Choir.

Garbutt is a Sophomore majoring in Piano Pedagogy.

The Collegiate Choir recently presented a recital "Laments, Prayers, and Alleluia" in the War Memorial Chapel. The recital of seven songs included Vox Populi by Giedrius Svilainis, Evening Prayer by Ola Gjeilo, Lamentations of Jeremiah by Z. Randall Stroope, and Mayn Rue Platz (a traditional Yiddish lament) arranged by Stephen Hatfield. All but one of the songs in the program were premier performances for the BJU campus. On November 13, the choir will perform at the Upstate Intercollegiate Choral Invitational Festival at Southern Wesleyan University and on December 5 they will sing as part of the annual Christmas Candlelight Tours at Biltmore Estate. The choir will end the semester by joining the Concert Choir and Chorale in presenting Handel's Messiah.

"I enjoy the opportunity to work with these young men and women and develop their talent," said Mr. Fred Coleman, Collegiate Choir director and head of the department of church music at BJU. "This year's recitals, concerts and opera provide a number of challenging venues for the students to perform and perfect their choral abilities."

The choral program at BJU is a developmental program comprised of seven graded choirs. Performances include concerts of standard choral literature, sacred service music, and the annual opera and oratorio performances. Each participant will have the opportunity to learn to use music for the service of God and to reach his or her individual technical and artistic choral potential within a program that strives for the highest level of musical excellence.
